Basic Steps for a Toilet Installation At Home

Hiring a plumber for toilet installation is usually your best bet. If you try to do it yourself you can come across difficulties that you may not be able to fix. But if you do choose to do it your self here are a few helpful tips. The first step is choosing the right toilet. This comes in various shapes and sizes. For those who are following a theme or color palette, they should choose a toilet based on the dominant color in the bathroom. For the rest, white or off white is a good choice. It is also important to choose a toilet that is not too large for the bathroom. There are many cases of bathroom doors not being able to close all the way after the installation of a toilet that is too large for the bathroom. Other important materials needed include the toilet flange, the wax ring, and caulking material.

Toilet Installation: Removing the Old Bowl

Turn off the water supply at the shut off valve. Empty the bowl and the tank by flushing the water. After completely draining the water from the tube, remove the bolts and nuts that secure the unit to the floor. These can be simply unscrewed or they can be removed by using penetrating oil or cutting the nuts off with a hacksaw. Rock the bowl from side to side to pry it loose from the floor and lift it upward gently. Cover the drainpipe with rags to prevent the escape of sewer gas.

Toilet Installation: Installation of a New Bowl

Use a putty knife to remove old wax from the floor flange. If the flange is damaged, replace it with a new one. Next, turn the new bowl upside down on the floor to access horn. Place a new wax gasket over it, with the tapered side faced away from the bowl before applying bathroom caulk around the base. Uncover the drainpipe and lower it on top of the flange, making sure to position the bolts on top of their holes. Press it down, twisting and rocking the unit in place. Check if it has been set down straight using a level. Hand tighten the washers and nuts and then use a wrench to finish tightening them onto the bolts until it is firmly set on the floor. Use plumberís putty to cover the caps and place them over the bolts.

Positioning the Toilet Tank

Place the flush bulb and tighten the spud nut in the center of the tank. Position the rubber tank cushion before placing the tank over it. Secure the tank onto the bowl by tightening the nuts and washers on the mounting bolts. Finally, hook up the supply tubes before opening the shutoff valve to let the water in.

As stated, the process of replacing an old toilet or installing one for the first time is pretty straightforward and easy. As long as one has all the materials needed on hand, this DIY home improvement project can be done in an hour, at the least. Homeowners who feel like they can tackle a broken sink can definitely perform a toilet installation with ease.
